On Sunday, September 25th, members of the NYC & Tri-State area Clemson Club will be among the 25,000-plus participating in the tenth annual Tunnel to Towers Run.  The run/walk begins at 9:30AM on the Gowanus approach to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel and will end at West & Vessey Streets, across from the World Trade Center site.  Please visit Tunnel to Towers Run for more information and to join your fellow Tigers at this special event.

The morning of  September 11th, 2001, firefighter and father of five, Stephen Siller, had just come off the late shift at Squad 1 in Park Slope, Brooklyn.  He was on his way home when news of the first plane hitting the Twin Towers came over his scanner.  He called his wife, Sally, to tell her he would be late and returned to Squad 1 to get his gear.  When Stephen drove his truck to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel it was already closed to traffic so, with sixty pounds of gear strapped to his back, he ran through the Tunnel towards the smoldering Towers to meet up with his Squad.  Stephen is one of 343 of New York City’s Bravest who died when the Towers fell.

In Stephen’s memory, the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation was created to encourage all of us to “follow in the footsteps of a hero,” by participating in, and contributing to, programs that make a lasting and positive difference in the lives of others.  In 2002, the foundation hosted it’s first 5K run in NYC that retraced Stephen’s final three-mile journey from the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers.  The event not only raised money and awareness for the programs and initiatives supported by the foundation, it also gave people the opportunity to share in a spirit of togetherness while honoring of the unwavering bravery of 9/11′s fallen heroes.  It has become one of the most poignant and powerful 9/11 remembrances and, this year, Tunnel to Tower runs will be held in over 50 cities across the country.
